Nautor’s Swan announces sale of Swan 115-003 FD

Finnish luxury yacht builder Nautor’s Swan started the second quarter of 2014 on a positive note with the sale of the third Swan 115, the new flagship of the SwanLine, designed by naval architect German Frers.

This Swan 115 is for a discerning European owner whose intention is to compete in the world’s most important regattas, having chosen the flushdeck (FD) version which features a split backstay, square top mainsail and high modulus spars.

The entire construction process of Swan 115-003 FD will take place in-house at Nautor’s facilities in Pietarsaari, to ensure the optimum quality that Nautor is known for, using leading edge techniques and materials. Built from a female mould and of pure carbon (pre-preg), the Swan 115 features a lifting, T-bulb keel and twin rudders. The interior configuration of the Swan 115 is extremely flexible, with the owner’s cabin aft or forward, three or four guest cabins and designated crew quarters for up to six.

Nautor currently has two other Swan 115 models in build: one Swan 115 S (semi-raised saloon) with lines and features designed predominantly for cruising and another Swan 115 FD, destined to both race and cruise the world’s oceans.

In addition to the new flagship Swan 115, Nautor recently launched a performance cruising range, which includes the Swan 60, 80 and 105 RS – built to the highest standards of excellence and seaworthiness, all suited for long-range, bluewater cruising.

Första vinnaren i Whitbread Round The World Race någonsin var Sayula II, en Swan 65:a år 1973-1974.

SWAN 82 NIKATA STORMS INTO HOBART

The Rolex Sydney Hobart is considered the Holy Grail of offshore racing, the 628-mile race is notorious for rough seas and storm force winds and the 69th edition was one of the most competitive editions on record. The 94-boat fleet featured five 100 foot maxis, numerous canting-keel stripped out race boats and seven former race winners.

In truly impressive style, the Swan 82, Nikata was the Swan to complete the race and was awarded second place in the highly competitive IRC Racing.

The race started benignly enough, as light winds slowed the progress of all of the yachts along the coast of New South Wales and into the Bass Strait. However, that all changed on the third day of the race. Southwesterly Gales battered the fleet with gusts of up to 50 knots and huge seas. Many yachts suffered damage, including a dismasting and several yachts retired due to gear failure and injuries to crew members. Swan 82 Nikata and her crew came through the savage weather with no damage whatsoever and successfully completed the course, less than five hours behind the overall winner on corrected time.

Nikata's navigator, Mike Broughton was taking part in his 11th Rolex Sydney Hobart. Broughton is a veteran of ocean racing having competed at the very top level for over 30 years.

“The race was mainly in light downwind conditions, which really suited the stripped-out race boats. We had all been racing in just T-shirts and shorts until we got to Maria Island, off Southeast Tasmania, then the storm arrived.

Nikata was well prepared for the weather on that final morning and we needed to be. As Nikata headed round Tasman Island we experienced the height of the awful conditions. Knowing we were sailing in a well-built Swan 82 made a big difference to the way we approached that final day and importantly at all times we had great confidence in our boat.

Nikata has the unmistakable lines of a Swan and certainly turned a few heads both in Sydney and Hobart. Not many yachts had cruised the Galapagos, Caribbean, Tahiti and New Caledonia on the way to the Hobart Race! For me, it was pretty special having an en-suite cabin and fine cuisine in a race I normally do in a stripped out 50 footer,” said Mike Broughton, Navigator onboard Swan 82, Nikata.

Final stages of preparation for the Swan Transatlantic Challenge

Ten Swans are in the final preparation stages for the ARC, the 2800 nautical mile passage from Gran Canaria to Saint Lucia, and will compete for the prestigious Swan Transatlantic Challenge trophy designed by Asprey.

Among the fleet of Swans is newly built Swan 53 Kathea (GER) which has just finished her first sailing season; emerging fresh from the Nautor’s Swan yard in Finland earlier this year, before she headed to Cowes, Isle of Wight to the Gazprom Swan European Regatta in July.

Commenting on his preparations for the ARC, Heinrich Voelker, owner of Swan 53 Kathea, said: "From the outset, our plan was to participate at the ARC and then the ARC World.  Kathea was built for these events and is equipped with everything necessary for this journey. For my own preparation, I have been to the gym once or twice a week and I hope that this will prepare me enough! I am looking forward to enjoying the time out on the water with Kathea and some good times with old friends.”

The renowned offshore rally is predicted to take between 14 – 21 days.  Swan 53 Kathea will be crossing the Atlantic along with other Swans ranging from Swan 46 Milanto to Swan 65 Vahine. These Swans will then remain in the Caribbean for the full season of cruising and racing.

The next event for the Swan Challenge Series will be the RORC Caribbean 600 in February. The Nautor's Swan Customer Care team are also onsite assisting owners with their final preparations.  Buon vento!

Swan 60 Emma wins Swan Mediterranean Challenge Trophy

swan60.jpgThe Rolex Middle Sea Race concluded this week in Malta with Swan 60 Emma taking the title of the best placed Swan to win the Swan Mediterranean Challenge trophy, after completing the 600 plus nautical mile race around the island of Sicily.

The 34th edition of the race, organised by the Royal Malta Yacht Club began on the 19th October. The spectacular start in the historic Grand Harbour, and the scenic yet challenging course around Sicily and other beautiful islands, made it a race to remember for the Swan entrants; especially for Swan 60 Emma, who completed the course in a corrected time of 4 days, 8 hours, 42 minutes and 39 seconds.

Commenting on Swan 60 Emma’s performance, owner Dr Johann Killinger said; “I have had a wonderful time on Emma at the Rolex Middle Sea Race. There were many reasons why we wanted to enter this race, primarily because of the interesting routing and also because of the timing. Our expectations were more than matched, with us coming first overall out of all ORC boats and third overall out of the IRC entries.

We had winds of between 0 and 20 knots and all kinds of upwind, downwind, and reach conditions. The first highlight was the start with the wonderful scenery of the Malta harbour; we had the best start of all boats which gave the crew great motivation for the whole race. The finish was of the same quality, we reached the finish line at the Malta Yacht Club at sunset with the wind dying. All in all it was a wonderful event and we very much hope to be back one day with Emma.

Looking ahead to 2014, in the first half of the year we will probably be cruising with Emma in the Aegean and maybe in the Black Sea. In the second half of the year we may want to do one or two races, maybe Copa Del Rey and/or the Swan Cup in Sardinia, we are also considering participating in the IMA Transatlantic Race to the BVI in late November.”

swan60b.jpgDr Killinger, who helmed Emma during the race, will be presented with the beautiful Swan Mediterranean Challenge trophy on Saturday at the prize giving. The Swan Mediterranean Challenge Trophy is awarded as part of the Swan Challenge Series, which recognises Swans’ performance in the most demanding offshore races.

Swan 53 Music also achieved excellent results, finishing 5th overall in IRC Class 3, based on a

corrected time of 4 days, 22 hours, 47 minutes and 32 seconds. Swans entered this year ranged in size from the Swan 46 to the Swan 65 and included Swan models from the current SwanLine including a Swan 53 and a Swan 60.

The next event in the Swan Challenge Series is the ARC race, the ARC is a ‘must do’ for many sailors, and attracts over 200 boats to sail 2800 NM across the Atlantic from Gran Canaria to Saint Lucia.

THE BUILD OF THE SWAN 115 BEGINS

mold_115_piccola-3.jpgExciting times at the Finnish yard where Nautor’s craftsmen have started the build of the new flagship, the Swan 115.

At the Nautor lamination shop in Kållby, the moulds for the Swan 115 hull are now in construction under the careful direction of Project Manager Anders Bertlin.

Building the moulds is a complex process. First of all, steel frames were placed into sections then additional frames of plywood were attached. To conform with the hull shape, wooden strips will soon be added and eventually more plywood, which will be laminated over with resin and glass fibre.

Once this is complete, the materials to be milled are added to the surface and eventually milled to the correct shape in a milling centre.  This is a unique step which makes Nautor’s way of building the actual mould very special. Once again, resin and glass fibre will be laminated over the mould and finally be smoothed out using compound and sanding.

The additional steps involve painting the surface, a post cure mould in the oven and finally a treatment with release products. Once these steps are finished, the builders will lay down inserts/plants for hull windows, keel recess etc. This is the last step before the lamination of the hull can start.

With the exception of building the actual frames, all the other steps are undertaken in-house at Nautor, which means a shorter lead time considering the size of the boat which results in a much more cost effective approach, compared to traditional systems. Having the knowledge in-house, with the right materials at each step, the technology and skilled workforce are key to achieving the end result, the first Swan 115.

BARCOLANA REGATTA 2013

The 45th annual Barcolana Regatta capped off a week of sailing celebrations in the Gulf of Trieste with more than 2,000 boats and 100,000 people taking part in this year’s regatta including, Swan 56 vanish ii, Swan 53 Borderless, Swan 37s, Cidrolin and Lettle Jo.  Swan 56 vanish ii was the winner of the ClubSwan award for the highest placed Swan.

The race started as a local competition between 51 boats in 1968, it is now the biggest event of its kind in the Mediterranean and of the busiest in the world.

A thrilling summer in San Francisco

Owner of Swan 45, Blue Nights, Tea Ekengren-Saurén spent part the summer in San Francisco watching the 34th America’s Cup. The Finnish sailing enthusiast loved her time in one of America’s most beautiful cities, watching one of the most thrilling sporting events of the year. “In just a few days I got to know this great town, especially by riding a bike from place to place. Also, visiting Stanford University was a great experience as my son Kalle was studying there at the time.”

As for the Cup itself: “It was a very cool, high-class event and at the same time very emotional,” she says, thinking back to the accident in May when Swedish challenger Artemis Racing suffered the capsize and destruction of its AC72 catamaran, resulting in the death of British Olympic gold medallist, Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson. “The Artemis people made the event very special, putting themselves fully in to it. They have had really hard times but they seemed to be a very strong team. We felt that we were privileged to share their feelings.

“All the people we met from Artemis were very helpful, but having Paul Cayard explaining the live racing - which you could watch simultaneously on TV and on the water - was of course very special. There is so much about the Cup that makes it exciting - revolutionary, high-tech vessels being raced by the best sailors in the world, and with amazing personalities running the show. It would be an extreme experience to race on board one of those boats.”

Although the high-speed, hydrofoiling catamarans seem a world apart from the comfort and stability of a Swan 45 like Blue Nights, it is still the same sport with the same people, says Tea. “We have had a lot of America’s Cup sailors racing on our Swan 45s - Paul Cayard, Jochen Schuemann, Rod Davis, and many others. My best sailing experiences have been racing with these real professionals. I met Jochen at a Louis Vuitton regatta in Nice, as I was a guest of Yacht Club Costa Smeralda   and they were giving a party for all the teams. The next summer, Jochen and I were racing together, and we ended up finishing second at the Swan 45 World Championships. He was very dedicated to our team when he was racing with us, and I found myself wondering why I hadn’t raced with such a high-class professional before.”

Although her tight schedule last summer meant there wasn’t much time to race Blue Nights this season, that is all set to change with some ambitious plans for the coming months. “Blue Nights has been lying at Marina di Scarlino and will be delivered to Helsinki this autumn. For the past eight years I have raced and sailed all over the Med, but I felt I would like to have her closer to my home in Helsinki and race in Finland next season. We will do the traditional circuit of shore races to Russia and Tallinn and the one in the most southern part in Finland, Hanko.

“I will have most of my international crew with me as I want them to experience our beautiful archipelago and especially our rocks!  We have been speaking to the Swan 45 class manager about hosting one event with the northern fleet as we have three active Swan 45s in Finland. We also wonder about holding an annual Swan regatta in Helsinki, because the Swan 46 is popular here, and we get to see the Swan 60s for the Nordstream Race.”

Outside of her own sailing, Tea likes to enthuse others with her passion and enthusiasm for the sport. “Recently we had a corporate challenge race, which I organised, and I took my employees to race for the second time and they are very excited about it. They loved it. The prizegiving was at the Navy base, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and we had a wonderful evening there. We used the event as an opportunity to raise funds for the Baltic Sea Action Group, and have now decided to hold this cup as an annual regatta.”

MEET THOMAS BOHRER OF NAUTOR’S SWAN -
GERMANY & AUSTRIA

A long standing member of the Nautor team, Nautor’s agent for Germany and Austria, Thomas Bohrer is leading the development of Nautor’s Swan – Mallorca International, based in Port Adriano, Palma.

Thomas Bohrer originally studied business and international tax at university before moving into the marine world with a career in the navy, first as a Commanding Officer on German submarines then progressing to Commander.

Following his military career, Thomas diversified and used his skills set to become the manager of a commercial shipyard, which led him to the coveted role of CEO of Dahm International.

A chance encounter with the Nautor team at an airport during 2005 inspired Thomas’ current move to work with Nautor’s Swan as the company’s representative for Germany and Austria which he now runs together with Jan Oplӓnder.

“Nautor’s Swan is a fantastic company to be involved with as we have such passionate owners who demand the best from their sailing.  The brand is based on quality and the Nautor name is renowned worldwide for trust, reliability, seaworthiness and performance with proven technology.  My role is uniquely interesting changing day to day, I have the benefit of being on site in Finland at the Nautor’s Swan Harbour to experience the first time an owner meets their new Swan.  A truly emotional moment, I get to share in the magic with the client,” said Thomas Bohrer.

Opening the new office in Palma fulfills another ambition of Thomas and will be an additional point of reference for European Swan agents including, Nautor’s Swan Benelux led by Gideon Messink.

Swan i Sverige.

Swan 60 Bronenosec top Swan in JP Morgan Round the Island Race

SUNDAY 2 JUNE 2013

The 2013 JP Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race was enjoyed by the original Swan 36 design right up to the new Swan 60.  At 0500 yesterday the largest of the Swan entries racing in IRC Group 0 were greeted by 12 to 15 knots from the North and a stunning sunrise in clear conditions during the first fetch to The Needles.

The Russian Swan 60 Bronenosec sailing under the Yacht Club of Saint-Petersburg burgee found a clear lane at the Royal Yacht Squadron end of the line and kept her speed throughout the whole circumnavigation, finishing in only 5 hours and 12 minutes; she was the first Swan overall and awarded the ClubSwan trophy, as well as being 6th in class and 13th IRC overall.

Igor Frolov, Director of Yacht Club of Saint-Petersburg, helming on board Bronenosec spoke happily on receiving the ClubSwan Award: ‘The most memorable stage was our start with Adrian Stead lining us perfectly amongst the TP52s.  The challenging part was round the back of the Wight near to St Katherine’s when we were tight two sail reaching with gusts coming in at 25 knots.  We were joined onboard by the London based Gazprom Marketing and Trading Sailing Team from our sponsors which made for an enjoyable mix of crew’.

‘We are all delighted to have won the ClubSwan Award as it was my, and my crew's, first time to race round the Isle of Wight.  The full crew will be back in July to Cowes for our Gazprom Swan 60 World Championships and we will then take part in the Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week and the Rolex Fastnet Race.’

Out of 1,459 entries the 23 strong Swan fleet put in some impressive results, within IRC Group 0 Club Swan 42 Magical Mystery Tour finished in 10th position and Club Swan 42 Brevity in 29th place.

The 60 mile race was the perfect prelude for Swan owners who are now all gearing up to the Gazprom Swan European Regatta at Cowes running from the 13-19 July, as well as the inaugural Gazprom Swan 60 World Championships and Swan 45 World Championships.

Nautor's Swan får frisk vind i seglen - inleder samarbete med Whyshore AB som ny agent i Sverige

TORSDAG 7 MARS
