Introducing the new Swan 60 owner - Mr Fan

Mr Fan is one of the two new owners of the above mentioned Swan 60 yachts. We caught up with Mr Fan and discovered his plans for his new Swan 60:

Q - Why did you choose a Swan 60?

A - The Swan 60 chose me rather than me choosing her. I decided I wanted to have a very nice sailing yacht as my birthday gift, and the Swan 60 fits this need perfectly. She has a great balance between cruising and racing, as well as pleasure and business. She stands out over other yachts with perfect craftsmanship and easy handling.

Q - What are your plans for 2014 with your new Swan 60?

A - After the delivery of my yacht I will take her to join the Gazprom Swan 60 Class 2014 Circuit, taking part in the three circuit regattas. I will also be using her to cruise with my son, around the Med. I can’t wait to have some quality time with him, in the beautiful ocean on the yacht without the distraction of computer games! I have a very strong team to race with me now, and I am expecting great results this year, it is definitely going to be an unforgettable life experience!

Class President reviews inaugural circuit

The Gazprom Swan 60 Class President Mr Vladimir Liubomirov reviews 2013 and looks ahead to 2014 and the future of the one-design Class.

“2013 has been a very positive year, rich with high quality races and regattas for the Gazprom Swan 60 Class. This is the year which proved the newly established Class to be dynamic, competitive, exciting—and let’s not forget fun. The teams who have come together to race in the Class this year have been fantastic. We have seen a number of world-renowned professional sailors race alongside up-and-coming youth sailors, creating a great diversity within the Class and really illustrating the unique opportunities this Class and racing circuit offer.

The racing itself brought us the first Gazprom Swan 60 World Championship, in Cowes, Isle of Wight, UK. Sailing in such a location was a terrific experience, it really is magnificent to sail in Cowes, and I am sure you all agree. With each event and each new circuit we hope to welcome new members to the Class and to really grow the Swan 60 family; after all this is about more than competing—we are creating a community who share the same passions and ambitions.

As we look to the future, we aspire to see twenty Swan 60 yachts out on the water by 2018— the class is growing and we believe it is going to be a very successful one-design class. As the Class President I would like to pay a special thank you to all of the hosting yacht clubs; to the owners for being so active, to the teams for doing such a magnificent job and for all those who have helped the class to emerge and grow into the recognised class it is today.”

Swan 60 EMMA - Meet the Team

Dr. Johann Killinger is the owner of the beautiful Swan 60 EMMA. Purchased in August 2009, Mr Killinger chose a Swan 60 as he wanted a high performance yacht which he could both race and cruise. His home port is Hamburg and they sail out of the Norddeutscher Regatta Verein.

We spoke with Dr. Killinger to discover the things he enjoys most about Swan 60 EMMA:

Q. Favourite sailing memory onboard your Swan?
A. There are so many, including the delivery from Northern Europe to Mallorca as that was fantastic. All of our family vacations on EMMA are brilliant; we combine sailing with anchoring in lovely scenic bays. Racing in the Rolex Middle Sea Race 2012 was also one of my favourite memories onboard EMMA.

Q. Favourite anchorage and reasons behind choice?
A. Capoeira Islands, South of Mallorca is a wonderful place, protected, quiet and clean. Pirate Bay in the Maddalena Archipelago is also wonderful and a favourite place of the kids. There are also lots of Greek bays which are stunning.

Q. Favourite beverage to enjoy onboard?
A. A nice cool white wine at anchor, whilst listening to Zorbas the Greek music.

Q. Favourite meal onboard
A. It would have to be our Boat Captain Hodel’s pasta with “whatever is left in the fridge” sauce.

Q. Favourite Regatta and reasons behind choice
A. Regatta Copa Del Rey Mapfre because of the beautiful conditions, they have a very professional race committee and there is perfect “après ski” in Palma de Mallorca.

Q. Dream destination to visit with your Swan
A. The British Virgin Islands and Maine.

Swan 60 Quick Facts

Q. How long does it take to build a Swan 60?
Just under one year.

Q. When was the first Swan 60 built?
The first Swan 60 was delivered in 2009 – this is the German Swan 60 EMMA.

Q. How many Swan 60s are on the water at present?
There are eight Swan 60s now sailing and two more in build – both for delivery in 2014.

Q. What are the unique features of the Swan 60?
To begin with the Swan 60 is built using the latest technology, design and construction methods; this model has an entirely new hull built from advanced materials. The Swan 60 is light and responsive thanks to the semi-planing speeds and foils with a forgiving performance. There are many design and interior options for owners who choose a Swan 60  which means each model can be made uniquely to the owner’s tastes.

Q. What are the benefits to crews racing on a Swan 60 compared to other race boats?
The Swan 60 is a very comfortable boat compared to pure racing boats, also the ease of handling is a benefit – the Swan 60 offers high stability and direct steering systems which means race teams enjoy unhindered movement around the boat at all times. Additionally the carbon fibre spars and racing foils (3.6 M draught) ensure a consistent racing performance.

The Swan 60 is also an ISAF Class with a full calendar of one design racing – the first circuit has now been completed and the Class is well established.

Sailing Project success for NRV

Norddeutscher Regatta Verein (NRV), joint organisers of the Nord Stream Race 2013, set out at the beginning of 2013 to establish a nationwide sailing project. The project aimed to introduce ambitious sailors to offshore sailing under the guidance of experienced regatta sailors, and to establish a successful offshore crew.

The German Offshore Challenge (GOC) team was created and nominated to sail onboard Swan 60 SGM. After competing in all four events on the Gazprom Swan 60 Class Circuit 2013, the team came away with an impressive 2nd place overall. Arne Hirsch, Marcus Illies and Anne Fritzemeier from NRV look back on the project and discuss the benefits of the project and their future plans.

Q. How do you feel the GOC project went?

We are very pleased that our project developed so well in such little time. Achieving 2nd place overall in the Swan 60 Class exceeded all of our expectations; as our first objective was to focus on safety and routine onboard. It was a great pleasure for the three of us to see how the youth sailors grew together as a team. The GOC crew is a good mix of ambitious sailors who have learnt a great deal this season; our youngest crew member is just 20 years old, and they have all laid a good foundation for the future.

Q. How did the project benefit those taking part?

The sailors have learnt a lot over the past year. The Gazprom Swan 60 Class is challenging in many aspects, for example the crew had to perform all manoeuvres perfectly in each race and regatta. The competitors in the Class are outstanding and have won many different titles such as the America's Cup, Volvo Ocean Race or Olympic Games. For our young sailors, racing in such an ambitious circuit was the best training they could have asked for.

Q. Highlights for yourselves as the GOC organisers?

Overall our 1st highlight would be the cooperation with Saint-Petersburg Yacht Club (SPBYC) and SGM for giving us the chance to sail the Swan 60. The 2nd highlight was the Rolex Fastnet Race, this must have been one of the proudest moments for us all. Finally, the victory of the inshore fleet race in Flensburg during the Nord Stream Race was brilliant. Also of course, every victory over Swan 60 Bronenosec and Swan 60 Spirit of Europe was a highlight for our team, as those boats are crewed by very experienced sailors. Apart from the victories, it was a great pleasure to get these ambitious guys and girls together and see their development as a team, backed up by the support of great international professionals.

Q. Were there any challenging moments?

Yes, such as the length of time we had to prepare beforehand, and of course the competition from the other teams was a challenge - the other crews were excellent and had a lot of experience. Also bringing individuals and dinghy sailors together on a big boat and for them to become a team was a challenge, but the team were fantastic and worked together well from the beginning.

Q. Future plans for the GOC team?

The first step will be to evaluate the whole project, we will do this during the winter. It is important for us to get feedback from the sailors, the organizers and our partners, Saint Petersburg Yacht Club and SGM. The next step will be to implement this feedback into our concept of the German Offshore Challenger project. The 2014 Circuit will begin with the Nord Stream Race 2014, this will begin at the end of May in Saint-Petersburg, Russia with Match Racing taking place in Helsinki. Then the teams will race 600nm to Warnemünde, Germany. Of course we want to defend the inshore trophy there and we want to see the GOC team within the top 3 ranking overall.

Swan 60 Petite Flamme in Team Building Exercise

During the Nord Stream Race 2013, Swan 60 Petite Flamme was raced by Team Turkey, a team mainly consisting of Bozphorus Gas Corporation employees, who utilised the race as a unique team building exercise.

Managing Director of Bosphorus Gas, Joachim Conrad explains the concept; "We chose sailing as our company's team building project as I thought that if we put a team together on a boat it becomes a matter of survival, and by being a matter of survival it would allow us to achieve a completely new level of bonding and cooperation amongst our employees. The Nord Stream Race was the perfect opportunity for this exercise and we are extremely pleased with the results, we now have further employees eager to take part in a similar race or regatta."

Team Turkeys Chief Helmsman Robert Klein was impressed with the teams results; "We all celebrated at the gala dinner after the race; the whole team were extremely happy and very proud of their achievement. The race was a fantastic team effort and once we realised that we were in with a chance of winning and that we could be competitive, the whole spirit and determination of the team changed. We decided we wanted to race for a position and fight for it. We all had a great time learning to sail and race the Swan 60, and we will now take this experience and new team dynamic back to the office."

As the only crew to consist of both female and male sailors, Seda Vural Senkardes, one of the female sailors onboard Team Turkey shared her experiences; "Taking part in the Nord Stream Race was such a great experience for me, it was the first time I had done anything like it. The first time that I saw Swan 60 Petite Flamme I really fell in love; she was beautiful, strong, well equipped - such a wonderful boat to sail on. The entire race was really exciting for us, during those five days out sailing across the Baltic we were a happy team.

The stormy day and night during the race scared us a little; as we were new to offshore racing I think the weather changing so quickly surprised us. We soon got used to it though and we got on with our jobs onboard. The men onboard may have been physically stronger than the women but that was the only difference! There were plenty of challenges faced by all of us and sometimes women are just better. I would definitely take part in the Nord Stream Race again, in fact I would love to!"
